Report of
FNCA 2014 Workshop on Electron Accelerator Application Project
- Radiation Processing of Natural Polymers -

9 - 12 February, 2015
Yogyakarta, Indonesia

The JFY 2014 FNCA Electron Accelerator Application workshop was held from 9 to 12 February, 2015 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Eight (8) FNCA member countries, participated in the workshop.

The first day was initiated with an open seminar entitled application of radiation processing for sustainable development and agriculture. There were approximately 50 participants from research institutes and universities in agricultural and industrial fields in Indonesia. Dr Djarot Sulistio Wisnubroto, Chairman of BATAN and Dr Sueo Machi, FNCA Coordinator of Japan gave their welcoming remarks and 5 participants from Indonesia, Japan and Vietnam gave presentations. And an exhibition was also held during the open seminar. Samples of commercialised products such as "Fitosan", the plant growth promoter in Indonesia were displayed. The summary of the open seminar is attached in Annex 1.

During the workshop, the current status of field tests on plant-growth promoters and super water absorbent was reported by each participating country. The summary of each report on plant growth promoters is attached in Annex 2 Part A, and on super water absorbents in Annex 2 Part B.

With regards to the plant growth promoters, Vietnam has succeeded in the commercial application of oligochitosan as an elicitor for rice plants and sugarcane, with 10-20% increases in the yields of rice. Thailand also has achieved the commercial application of oligochitosan as a plant-growth promoter and elicitor. Indonesia has conducted semi-field tests of oligochitosan on a variety of plants, including chili, rice, rubber tree, tomato, potato and shallot, achieving highly promising results with yields increased by 25 to 300%. In the meeting, it was recommended that commericialisation of the plant-growth promoter/elicitor produced from chitosan/carrageenan be target for JFY 2017. As for the super water absorbents, Thailand has implemented field tests on baby corn and achieved increases in yields of 45%, and promising results also have been obtained for bamboo and rubber tree plants. Currently, Indonesia is conducting experiments on shallot and chili in fields that have sandy soil with highly-promising results.

The participants agreed to continue cooperation and collaboration with the IAEA/RCA in sharing information of radiation processing, including R&D on plant-growth promoters and super water absorbents.

On third day, the participants visited Playen vilage, Gunung Kidul District, Yogyakarta Province to see the site for semi-field test on oligochitosan applied to pady. They also visited Bantul District, Yogyakarta to see semi-field test on super water absorbents and oligochitosan applied to shallot, chilli and eggplant. The results obtained from the semi-field tests showed significant results in terms of weight and reduction of disease of plants. The summary of each session of the workshop is attached in Minutes.
