FNCA 2015 Workshop on Electron Accelerator Application Project
- Radiation Processing of Natural Polymers -
8 - 11 February 2016
Manila, the Philippines

The FNCA Electron Accelerator Application Project workshop JFY 2015, which was co-organized by Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) and Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT) was held from 8 to 11 February 2016 in Manila, the Philippines. Eight (8) FNCA member countries, namely Bangladesh, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mongolia, the Philippines and Thailand, have participated in the workshop.
The workshop was opened with the welcoming remarks from Dr Alumanda M. Dela Rosa, Director of PNRI, Ms Moe Aoki from MEXT and Dr Hideki Namba, FNCA Advisor of Japan. During the workshop, country reports on Plant Growth Promoters (PGP) and Super Water Absorbents (SWA), both on the theme of commercialization and new research, were presented by each participating country. At present, six countries for PGP and three for SWA have already achieved commercialization. Each member country that is currently conducting research and experiments aiming at commercialization of PGP and/or SWA is facing different types of problems or obstacles during research and development as well as in commercialization. Please refer to the Annex 4 Part A (PGP) andAnnex 4 Part B (SWA) for the country report summaries.

The Open Seminar titled "Applications of Radiation Technology to Support Sustainable Development" was held in PNRI on 10 February. The seminar was attended by around fifty participants from research institutes and universities in agricultural and industrial fields in the country. Four presentations were delivered by scientists from Philippines (2), Japan (1) and Thailand (1). The summary of the Open Seminar is attached as Annex 3.

The participants visited the PNRI Gamma and Electron Beam Irradiation Facilities as a Technical Visit after the Open Seminar. An officer-in-charge of the facility gave an orientation about the Gamma Semi-Commercial and Mutlipurpose Facility and enumerated the materials being processed in that facility. Next stop was the Electron Beam Irradiation Facility, which was only launched last December 2015. The facility which has EB accelerator of 2.5 MeV and 100 kW power is currently utilized for R&D activities on radiation processing of different polymeric materials. The production of carrageenan, from preparing of solution to dispensing to the liquid handling system, was demonstrated. The summary of each session of the workshop is attached in Minutes.
