MEMORANDUM of
Program Formulation Meeting for
Multilateral Research Program 2 (MRP-2):
“Insect Resistance in Orchid”
=FNCA Mutation Breeding Project=
August 26-27, 2002
Beijing, China |
On August 26 and 27, 2002, the Project Formulation Meeting was held in Beijing, China on “Insect Resistance in Orchid” as the Multilateral Research Program 2 (MRP-2) under the framework of FNCA Mutation Breeding Project. Project Leaders and specialists from six countries, i.e. China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan attended the Meeting, and discussed how to organize the research work effectively.
In the Meeting, present status of Orchid breeding research was presented from each country. According to the reports, Cymbidium and Dendrobium were main genera of interest and used as the experimental material. Techniques for mutation induction and selection of mutant with resistance to the harmful insect, especially to Thrips were elaborated and discussed. Dendrobium (hybrid) was finally chosen for the breeding material of MRP-2. Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand were decided to be the initial participating countries. China and Vietnam will cooperate during the course of the program when the promising mutants were developed.
It was also agreed that one clone from each participating country should be exchanged and used as the starting common materials. Concerning on the gamma irradiation for MRP-2, Thailand accepted the use of their irradiation facilities at the Gamma Irradiation Service and Nuclear Technology Research Center (GISC) of Kasetsart University (KU), and Malaysia kindly expressed the open use of Gamma Greenhouse of Malaysian Institute of Nuclear Technology Research (MINT) when it is completed in 2004. The Working Plan of MRP-2 is as attached.
