60 | Program Title | WERC FIHRDC Atomic Energy Researchers and Research Students Acceptance Program FY2012 Reaction behavior of ZrO2 coated Zr alloys with UO2 |
Field | D. Fuel/Material
Outline | This program is designed to invite overseas researchers and students who want to research on improvements in nuclear safety technology and application technology to support their research at universities or institutes in Fukui Prefecture. Metal Uranium or the alloy of Uranium and Zirconium (called U-Zr alloy hereafter) forms by the reaction of UO2 and Zirconium alloys inside the cladding tube around 1500 â„ during a severe accident of light water reactors. The U-Zr alloy has melting temperature around 1000â„ and thus begins to melt at the temperature much lower than the melting temperature of UO2, 2860â„ or that of Zr alloys around 1800â„? In the present study in order to avoid this melting at the lower temperature, ZrO2 is supposed to be coated on the inside of the cladding. The reaction tests of UO2 and ZrO2 coated Zr alloy are performed and it is observed what kind of the reaction layer forms and whether the coated ZrO2 increase the melting temperature or not. |

61 | Program Title | WERC FIHRDC Atomic Energy Researchers and Research Students Acceptance Program FY2012 Research about correlation between microstructural changes and thermal ageing embrittlement in duplex stainless steels for nuclear reactor applications |
Field | D. Fuel/Material
Outline | This program is designed to invite overseas researchers and students who want to research on improvements in nuclear safety technology and application technology to support their research at universities or institutes in Fukui Prefecture. A duplex stainless steel has both a ferrite phase and an austenite phase coexisted and is superior in strength, corrosion resistance and stress corrosion cracking (SCC)- resistance. For nuclear reactor application, it is used for a primary coolant pipe / coupling, pump, and valve. The duplex stainless steels show the spinodal separation of both ferrite and austenite' phases around 475C ageing, and ageing hardening and the embrittlement behavior as known as "475C brittleness" occurred The duplex stainless steels for the nuclear reactor application is used around 290-325C, but it becomes an ageing degradation problem for a long time usage. With the model alloy and duplex stainless steels aged at 475C , the objective of this work is to evaluate the correlation between microstructural change obtained by TEM observation and mechanical properties changes measured by tensile test and nano-indentation tests. |

66 | Program Title | Nuclear Reactor Safety in Hanoi University Science and Technology: (Global Nuclear Human Resource Development(Hitachi-GE Nuclear Energy) GNHRD-HGNE) |
Field | E. Nuclear/Radiation Safety
Outline | This subject aims to introduce safety concept and principles of nuclear power plant (light water reactor mainly) for post-graduate students at HUST. Nuclear Reactor Safety course concentrates on understanding phenomena occurred in normal operation, operational transient, accident (such as Loss of Coolant Accident, Reactivity Excursion, etc.). Safety design and safety analysis are the main issues to be mastered in the course. Safety system is designed based on Defense in Depth concept, such as shutdown/ cooling/ contain or prevention/ mitigation/ evacuation. Safety analysis method is broadly divided to two approaches. One is deterministic safety analysis based on Design Basis Accident and Single Failure Criterion. Another is probabilistic one based on risk concept. Both methods are important for safety design, therefore both are explained in detail. Other two items given in the course are Site Evaluation Operation Safety, and Radiation Safety. 1: Basic Safety principle 2: Issues Considered in Safety 3: Safety Design of Light Water Reactor 4: IAEA Safety Concept 5: Thermal Hyraulics 6: LOCA Analysis 7: Deterministic Safety Analysis 8: Probabilistic Safety Analysis 9: Severe Accident 10: Site Analysis 11: Reactor Dynamics 12: Radiation Safety |

68 | Program Title | WERC FIHRDC Atomic Energy Researchers and Research Students Acceptance Program FY2012 Study on the low-temperature plasma used for capture of the radioactive species |
Field | E. Nuclear/Radiation Safety
Outline | This program is designed to invite overseas researchers and students who want to research on improvements in nuclear safety technology and application technology to support their research at universities or institutes in Fukui Prefecture. There are many techniques for the capture of radioactive species to reduce risks to the environment and human health. Some of these techniques include the use of electrostatic devices, or plasma chemistry based techniques. Electrostatic devices such as electrostatic precipitators are usually inefficient at low particle sizes. The use of microwave technology for the generation of the low temperature plasma environment appears promising for smaller particle sizes. Hence, some of the species of interest, such as Iodine and Cesium compounds, may be more easily charged by microwave excitation and thus improve the efficiency of capture. The purpose of this study is to establish a microwave system configuration for the generation of focused regions of low temperature gaseous plasma. Experiments will be conducted on various microwave configurations with different airflow to determine the optimum apparatus, charging chamber size, and excitation energy. Different airflow configurations representing potential exhaust gas conditions.Established microwave configuration should have the injection ability of various particle species associated with environmental impact including species of Iodine and Cesium which can result in some nuclear power plant related accidents. |
