for the 3rd FNCA Coordinators Meeting

February 28 , 2002
Yogyakarta , Indonesia

On February 25 to March 1 , 2002 , the Project Formulation Meeting was held in Indonesia on “Drought Tolerance in Sorghum , Soybean and Sugarcane” as Multilateral Research Program (MRP) under the framework of FNCA Agriculture Project (Mutation Breeding). Project Leaders and specialists from China , Indonesia , the Philippines , Vietnam and Japan attended the Meeting , and discussed how to organize the research work effectively.

During the Meeting , two kinds of crop species , i.e. sorghum and soybean have finally been selected as targets for indication of drought tolerance variety. After presenting the report on current status of breeding for drought tolerant varieties from each country , it was agreed that China and Indonesia would mainly take part in breeding sorghum , while the Philippines and Vietnam were in soybean.

Exchange of breeding materials was agreed among the participating countries , which necessarily intended only for breeding purposes. For this , all participating countries have agreed to exchange breeding materials of sorghum and soybean in the first year (FY2002). Time schedule for the next four years starting April 2002 has been decided as shown in the attached table , and Mid-term Report of the work will be presented in FY2004 FNCA Workshop.

# Theme of MRP: Drought Tolerance
