FNCA 1999 Workshop on Research Reactor Utilization

3.Activities and Results until 1999

Workshops up to now and their results are as follows:

(1) Period: FY1992-FY1999 held once/year eight times in total

(2) Contents of activities:

Scientific Forum
in Indonesia, FY1991
  • The present status of Utilization of Research Reactors in each country was reported at the “Scientific Forum for the Utilization of Research Reactors”.
  • “Neutron Scattering Experiment”, “Neutron Activation Analysis” and “RI Production ” were chosen as cooperation themes.

The 1st workshop in Indonesia, FY1992
  • Report from each country and discussion on the “Neutron Scattering Experiment”, “Neutron Activation Analysis” and “RI Production ” were held

The 2nd workshop in Indonesia, FY1993
  • Report of research on Neutron Scattering Experiment and a sub-workshop on “Structure Analysis of High-temperature Superconducting materials (OJT) with High Resolution Powder Diffractometer (HRPD)” in each country was held.
  • The measurement results of air pollution material by Neutron Activation Analysis in each country were reported.
  • Discussion was held on the use of gel generators, demos of Mo/Zr gel generators, and use of low enriched uranium for 99Mo atomic fission, etc.

The 3rd workshop in Indonesia, FY1994
  • Report of research on the Neutron Scattering Experiment was made and a sub-workshop was held. The increase in users of the neutron beam in each country through the past two experiments was confirmed. Proposal for issuing of newsletters was also offered.
  • Report was made on the analysis results of standard samples and on the measurement results of Neutron Activation Analysis in each country.
  • As regards the theme of RI production, demonstration experiment on 99Mo- 99mTc gel generators was carried out at the sub-workshop. Proposal for issuing of newsletters was also offered.

The 4th workshop in Indonesia, FY1995
  • Report of research on Neutron Scattering Experiment was made and experimental results of sub-workshops were summed up.
  • Sampling and Measurement condition for Neutron Activation Analysis in each country were unified.
  • As regards the theme of RI production, discussion was held on 99Mo- 99mTc gel generator-related technique, RI for cancer therapy, and the quality assurance system for radiation measurements.
  • “Safe Operation and Maintenance of Research Reactors” was proposed as a new theme.

The 5th workshop in Indonesia, FY1996
  • The experimental results of sub-workshops on the Neutron Scattering Experiment were summarized.
  • Proposal for a Small Angle Neutron Scattering Experiment was made.
  • Report on analysed results of environmental Sample by Neutron Activation Analysis in each country was made, and discussion on its cooperation theme was carried out.
  • As regards the theme of “Safe Operation and Maintenance of Research Reactors”, “Maintenance of aged reactor and upgrading of reactors” in each country and its cooperation theme was discussed.

The 1996 Workshop on Utilization of Research Reactors
(November 25-28, in Indonesia)

Neutron scattering experiment device at Serpong,
a town in the suburbs of Jakarta, Indonesia

The 6th workshop in Indonesia, FY1997
  • Joint research results on the subject of Neutron Scattering including “High-temperature Superconductors”, “Permanent Magnetic Materials”, and “Super-ionic Conductors” were reported by participating country, and summarize.
  • Reports on RI producing technique for medical use and on related research were made. At sub-workshops,demonstration experiment on Poly Zirconium Compound (PZC) Absorbent for 99Mo- 99mTc was carried out.
  • As regards the theme of “Safe Operation and Maintenance of Research Reactors”, discussion on “Management of Aging Reactors and upgrading of reactors” was carried out.

The 7th workshop in Indonesia, FY1998
  • As regards the theme of Neutron Scattering, “Research on polymer materials for small angle neutron scattering measurement” was started. OJT that included standard sample measurements with neutron scattering experimental devices was held.
  • As regards the theme of RI production, it was agreed that regional cooperation was necessary for the improvement, evaluation, and use of generators that utilize PZC.
  • Air pollution study project by Neutron Activation Analysis were summarized and this projects were completed.
  • As regards the theme of “Safe Operation and Maintenance of Research Reactors”, discussion on of reactor and “Safety aspects on upgrading and decommissioning of reactors” were carried out the significance of “preventive and predictive maintenance” systematic maintenance was recognized.

The 8th workshop in Japan, FY1999
  • The two projects, study on polymer “Small Angle Neutron Scattering experiment” and “structural analysis of functional materials” that were proceeded chosen for the purpose of applying Neutron Scattering technology to industrial areas, were developed since 1998. Reports on the experimental results at sub-workshops, on cooperative research and on research tasks were summarized.
  • On the subject of “RI production”, evaluation on the performance of PZC samples of column packing materials for the 99Mo- 99mTc generator was implemented based on the report submitted by each country.
  • As regards the theme of “Safe Operation and Maintenance of Research Reactors”, the participants shured the common understanding about “Preventive and predictive maintenance of reactors ”, and “Safety aspects on up grading and decommissioning of reactors”, projects were completed.
