The Mass Media people and people from
the Public Information gathered togather
The Workshop on Public Acceptance of Nuclear Energy-FNCA 2000 was held from November 1-3, 2000 in Soul, Korea. The workshop was held by the Ministry of Science and Technology(MOST) of Korea and the Science and Technology Agency(STA)* of Japan,in Cooperation with Krean Atomic Energy Research Institute(KAERI) and Japan Atomic Industrial Forum,Inc(JAIF).
The participants in this workshop were Project Leaders involved in the public information activities, policy makers involved in nuclear energy in general and public informati on, and media representatives from the eight member countries of "The Forum for Nuclear Cooperation in Asia (FNCA)", i.e. China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.
*It was re-organized to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan from 2001

Prof. Hak-Soo Kim of Sogang University made his keynote address(right)
As a Special Lecture, Dr. Sueo Machi, the FNCA Coordinator of Japan presented and introduced various applications of nuclear energy in sustainable economic and social development, which is based on his experience at IAEA.
Prof. Hak-Soo Kim of Korea made his keynote address for the Session 1 on "The Role of the Mass Media and the Public Perception of Nuclear Energy". Following this, the media representative from each country reported on how to provide information, what is requested to those who are concerned in nuclear energy, press coverage on nuclear energy in the county, etc.
 
 

Opinion was lively exchanged with the Mass Media
At the discussion after these reports, opinions was exchangedlively among participants. Prof. Yasumasa Tanaka of Japan together with Prof. Hak-Soo Kim served as co-moderators.
 
 

Local TV Broadcasting station taking pictures
Regarding some topical issues, Thailand reported the impact of radiological accident which happened in February 2000. Japan reported on foundation and activities of WIN-Japan, and the Philippines made a report on impact of foreign nuclear incidents on the Philippines.
First day, local 24 hours TV broadcasting station which is called YTN jointed to take pictures to the workshop. Further more, the 12th Pacific Basin Nuclear Conference (PBNC) was held during the same period of the workshop and some of its participants were joined to the workshop as observers. About 70 people were attended to the workshop on that day.
 
 
Technical visit to Korea Atomic Energy
Research Institute (KAERI)
On the second day, "Reports and Discussion on Regional Cooperation for the Next Three Year" were explained by the PA Project Leaders. At the Round Table Discussion, there was intensive discussion on a concrete plan for activities for the three-year activities plan based on the PA Project Leaders meeting in the previous evening and on the reports by the project leaders.
Final day, all participants joined technical tour to the KAERI's facilities in Taejon.
