The Philippines, through the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) of Japan jointly hosted the First Project Leaders Meeting on Public Information of Nuclear Energy on December 10 - 12, 2001 at the PNRI compound in Diliman, Quezon City. The meeting was in cooperation with by the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF).

The meeting is one of the activities of Public Information on Nuclear Energy which is one of the areas of cooperation within the framework of the Forum for Nuclear Cooperation in Asia (FNCA). 12 delegates from China, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam participated in this activity . Delegates from Japan was headed by Dr. Sueo Machi, FNCA Coordinator of Japan and Senior Managing Director of JAIF.

The meeting provided an opportunity for project leaders on public information in their respective countries to discuss possible new strategies which could enhance public information activities in the region.


The project leaders of public information in each country discussed the future cooperation
The meeting coincided with the 29th annual Atomic Energy Week (AEW) celebration of the Philippines. This provided the project leaders the opportunity to join the PNRI officials, staff and guests in the AEW opening ceremonies and also in the opening of exhibits for public viewing on December 10. Mr. Tetsuya Endo, Vice-Chairman of Atomic Energy Commission of Japan, gave a message during the opening ceremonies. Dr. Carol Yorobe, Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Assistant Secretary for Finance and Administration, delivered the keynote address in behalf of the Secretary of the DOST, Dr. Estrella F. Alabastro, during this special occasion.

As part of the meeting, the project leaders and the Japan delegation had a lunch encounter with some Philippine media representatives from print, radio and television. This resulted in fruitful exchange of ideas about how to resolve the issue of communicating scientific findings through the language of the media reporters. DOST Assistant Secretary Yorobe, PNRI Acting Director Dr. Alumanda M. Dela Rosa and a representative from the academe were present during the media interaction.

The two-day meeting reviewed the past and present situations of public information activities in Member countries. The project leaders evaluated these activities including the continuation of on-going FNCA public information projects such as the AsiaNNet, FNCA Newsletter, and FNCA homepage. Proposals/recommendations for the conduct/continuation of the following public information activities in the future were likewise presented:
1) Dispatch of speaker/s for special events organized by the country should be promoted under the Regional Speakers Bureau activities
2) Exchange of communication with mass media
3) Joint survey for high school students on radiation utilization

This year, the PNRI availed of the FNCAs dispatch of speakers under the Regional Speakers Bureau activities. Three experts on nuclear energy applications from Japan and Malaysia were speakers in the technical sessions during the AEW celebration. The experts/speakers and their topics were the following: Mr. Tetsuya Endo - Nuclear Energy in Sustainable Development; Dr. Sueo Machi - Socio Economic Impacts of Non-Power Applications of Nuclear Science and Technology for Human Welfare (Food, Health , Industry and Environment); and Dr. Mohd Nazir Basiran (Research Officer/FNCA- Mutation Breeding Project Leader of Malaysian Institute of Science and Technology) - Applications of Nuclear Technology in Agriculture in Malaysia. The AEW technical sessions were held on Dec 10 and 11 at the PNRI Auditorium.

On December 12, Participants had a studio tour of ABS-CBN, one of the biggest radio and television broadcasting network in the Philippines.

Forum for Nuclear Cooperation in Asia
