Seminar on Food and Agricultural
Product Irradiation
Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP) held a Seminar on Irradiation
of Food and Agricultural Product on 14 May 2004 at OAP. The
objective of this Seminar was to gather the opinion and co -
operation between Government Officials and Private Sectors including
food and food product's exporters. The Seminar comprised of
lectures by experts and discussion on "Irradiation : The
Alternative of Thai Industries". There were around 60 participants
attended this Seminar.
Executive Secretary of the Preparatory Commission for the
Comprehensive Nuclear - Test - Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO
PrepCom) visited Thailand
Dr. Wolfgang Hoffmann, Executive Secretary of the Preparatory
Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear - Test - Ban Treaty
Organization (CTBTO PrepCom) paid a courtesy call on Mr. Korn
Thapparansi, Minister of Science and Technology on 13 May 2004
at the Ministry during his formal visit to Thailand recently.
The topic of the discussion was the progress development of
the CTBTO PrepCom and other related acitivities. Thailand signed
the CTBTO since 12 November 1996 but has not yet ratified the
treaty.
Nuclear Technology in Industries
Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP) offers Radiation Technique
for inspection during production process in industries.
OAP has been providing services to refineries, petrochemical
and petroleum factories which have to operate around the clock.
Inspection method by using radiation techniques which is applied
during operation will help engineers and CEOs in solving problems
and reduction maintenance. More than 66 unit/year have been
provided service by OAP. The cost of OAP's service is far lower
than of foreign companies. OAP has been helping the country
to reduce foreign currencies by as much as 8 million baht/year.
There is a plan to expand this service in the future.
Expert Mission on Management of Spent Radium
- 226 Sources by Conditioning
During 16 - 30 May 2004, an expert team from the International
Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Korea Atomic Energy Research
Institute (KAERI) came to Thailand to co - operate with the
Office of Atoms for Peace (OAP) in Radium - 226 conditioning.
The strategy of safe management of disused radium sources is
the optimization of conditioning techniques. By using this technique,
radioactive waste product will be strong, endurance and no possibilitity
of radioactive leakage. The product is safe for storage.
This mission was led by Mr. Mohamed Al - Mughrabi and Mr. Kil
Jeong Kim under IAEA Model Project : INT/4/131 supported by
the National Workplan for Radioactive Waste Management in Thailand
and co - operate with KAERI. Nowadays, many institutes, especially
hospitals, cancer institutes, industrial works and research
institutes send their disused Radium - 226 to OAP for proper
conditioning and storage.
