Mission
Vietnam Atomic Energy Commission (VAEC) was established by the Government on 26 April 1976 currently under the direct management of the Ministry of Science and Technology with its overarching mission that is to conduct scientific research and develop nuclear technology, serve the state management on atomic energy, and provide technical support to the state management body on radiation protection and nuclear safety.
In order to achieve the mission, VAEC has the following duties:
- To study and formulate directions, policies, strategies, planning and plans for atomic energy development in Vietnam;
- To conduct fundamental and applied research on nuclear science and technology, nuclear reactor technology, nuclear reactor fuel and material, radiation protection and nuclear safety, radioactive waste treatment and management technology;
- To develop technology, production and technical services in atomic energy field and related areas in service of social and economic development;
- To co-ordinate and participate in the implementation of international co-operation activities in the field of atomic energy, and participate in the implementation of international treaties pledged by Vietnam;
- To provide technical support to the state management body on radiation protection and nuclear safety in the assessment and appraisal of radiation protection and nuclear safety, carry out radioactive environment monitoring, calibrate radiation dosimeters and nuclear facilities, provide radiation dose measuring service, develop technical infrastructure for the preparedness and response to radiological and nuclear accidents;
- To participate in the planning, education and training of scientists and technicians in the field of atomic energy.

Main achievements
Having successfully completed several national projects on nuclear power introduction study; Active contribution to the preparation of technical and legislative infrastructures, and human resources development for the future nuclear power program in Vietnam . Having made a significant contribution to the international co-operation in the field of atomic energy; providing technical assistance to radiation protection and nuclear safety in the country; Active contribution to bring various applications of nuclear technique and the technology of radioactive and rare elements into socio-economic development.
